Marigold Myths

Following a conversation my colleagues and I had, about marigolds (yes, we have some weird conversations), I questioned why we often call them marigolds rather than rubber gloves, and so I present to you this blog post.

Many items we use every day, like hoovers and post-its, were once brand names. These names are or were trademarked but are now used to describe a product generically by consumers. Here is a list of some of the most popular items:

1/ Marigolds

In 1950, Marigold launched the first of their latex rubber gloves and although many brands have since released their own rubber gloves, consumers still refer to the washing up essential as marigolds.

2/ Hoover

Hoover is a vacuum cleaner company who invented the first upright vacuum cleaner in 1908. To this day many consumers call their vacuum a hoover, despite it not being from that brand.

3/ Post-its 

Dr. Spencer Silver, a 3M scientist discovered the light adhesive, another 3M scientist Art Fry found a practical use for this adhesive and together the sticky note was born under the brand name Post-it. And the brand name stuck (pardon the pun), still to this day do many refer to sticky notes as post-its.

4/ Tupperware

You know those plastic food containers we all call Tupperware? Tupperware was actually the brand name; Tupperware Brands Corporation was founded as The Tupperware Company in 1946 by Earl Tupper.

5/ Biro pens

In 1938, Laszlo Biro invented the first ball point pen. He had noticed that the ink used in newspaper printing dried quickly and so he decided to create a pen using the same ink. Now, many of us just refer to ballpoint pens as biros.
